Sophie helped bring me back to life.
I came to Sophie as a binge drinker and marijuana user, having just gotten a DUI. On the surface, I may have seemed OK to most. I was thriving at work, but my personal life was a mess. I have been working with Sophie for almost two years now and I am in a lot of ways a different person, a far more emotionally balanced person.
One thing Sophie does that is really unique is she doesn’t define you by what brings you through her front door, whatever your struggles may be. Instead, she looks for clues in your life that may have contributed to your current state – like a Detective and then activates solutions. When I say she “activates solutions” I don’t mean she does it for you. She can’t. You have to put in the work yourself and she will put some pressure you to do so. She doesn’t wallow in your past or let you do that either. In fact, a lot of what she notices she doesn’t actively bring up with you because doing so just wouldn’t be productive. Rather, she focuses most of your time together looking into the future and focusing on positive changes you can make.
This is another very special thing about Sophie – she is not there to just hear your woes week in and week out. Sophie is results oriented – she truly wants you to succeed. She sees potential in your mess and simply wants to see you work towards that potential. Be prepared for some tough love – it works. Be prepared to be guided and at times pushed out of your comfort zone. At first, this may feel intrusive but you can liken her to world class fitness instructor. If you wanted to get in the best shape of your life, would it work if your Instructor just listened to your excuses, your past trials, and tribulations and told you everything you were currently doing is O.K.? I don’t think so.
Sophie looks at your picture holistically and brings in other specialists as she sees fit. I worked with a nutritionist and with another addiction specialist. I liked that Sophie looks outside of herself to help paint your picture and put you on the path to success . She knows she can’t be everything for everybody. Which brings me to another unique trait of Sophie’s – her humility. Sophie does not see herself as “better” than her clients – in fact, I think she sees a piece of herself in them and thus has a lot of empathy.
You have to be serious about your own success if you want to work with her. If you are looking for a warm cozy blanket to snuggle up to for an hour a week she will likely not be for you (although she will totally be that on occasion). If you are looking to undergo probably the hardest process you will go through in your life, and come out the other side a more evolved, balanced and happy individual she will get you there, and hold your hand the whole way. She was there for me at the drop of a dime, in my darkest moments, and I will be forever grateful for her.
Her compassion, sense of humor, warrior spirit, and experience in her field make her a truly remarkable therapist, and human in general.
